After you just need a DAW with standar plugins, standar speakers like NS10 and larger drivers in order to check the low-end. The rest is marketing purposes or reach people who like to thing that they are good because of their nice room, speakers...

Looking seriously at adding a 500 series rack (WesAudio Supercarrier II 11-slot 500 Series Chassis) to upgrade our mastering chain... do you have a more detailed video you can point us to for a deeper dive into how to specifically setup a good 500 series mastering chain that you describe in this video? Understood that stereo versions of 500 series modules are required but it is muddy for us how you are using side-chain and perhaps other widening techniques using mono versions of modules in this chain system... would be nice to understand the specific connections as well as sequence of the modules that you have used to get the best output. We have two 19" units that can be placed into the sequence with a 500 series rack which are the Rupert Neve Portico II and the Neve MBT. Would be very curious to understand your perspective on how those two units could be used with the 500-series chassis --- the options you quote out here are: - Elysia xpressor neo 500 Series Class A Stereo Compressor - Elysia Nvelope 500 Series Stereo Impulse Shaper with Dual EQ Capabilities - Shadow Hills Industries Dual Vandergraph 500 Series Stereo Compressor - Maag Audio EQ4 500 Series 6-band Equalizer - Kush Audio Clariphonic 500 You discussed the costs aspects of the 500 series but the other one for us is expandability... we have only 3U remaining in our mix desk so this is driving the thought process here to get the most from the remaining real estate we have. Look forward to your comments of a top-quality 500 series mix/mastering setup with the 500 series leaving out the Reupert neve 500 series but including 19" versions of the transformer magic. Nice. I been wondering about the Michaelangelo EQ. It has a good rep, as far as I can see. Maybe at some point you would be up to showing us how you use the plugin version of the Michaelangelo...? :)

Three great choices there. I would add that Wavesfactory SPECTRE does things that no other digital EQ can touch. Similar to a hardware Carnaby EQ, but it has an incredible de-emphasis feature. SPECTRE on high quality mode does things that even analogue EQs cannot do.

Agree agree but i remember a mix with the masters where the top mixer left stage of Andrew Schieps said he has like only two random acoustic treatments in a random room. That guy and the kid mixing on laptop and headphones is making great or better mixes than $$$ setup.

As usual I think transients sounds a bit smoother more pleasing with the hardware. There is a slight ”lush” advantage with the hardware. Little more weight in the low mids, little ”thicker”.

That's one thing I wish I'd have known at the beginning of my home studio build. That the order or priority or major benefits of being able to mix are: Skills/Experience, Then 'The Room', then the monitoring.... the 'gear' its only going to add that little bit extra, an the benefit of that little bit extra is not going to be as accurate or 'good' without those three things being at a high level. I'd have saved a LOT of money (and my setup would by 2x AA animal rigs, inc the room) lol.. so now instead of buying more plugins, more kit etc. I'm investing in the skills. enjoying the kit for what it is - and hell it is a LOT of fun to use. But in 2026, will invest in an AA grade room to monitor and mix in. That's the next step. This post speaks a lot of sense. @Paul - irony is. I'd have payed 25K for that info when I reach out for advice asking what to do to build my studio. So next time a nutter emails you randomly. Maybe rethink the approach to respond :-) All good though.

Actually one question I have to still find a answer to... mastering a binaural stereo mixdown... ??? is that a thing?... as a way of offering a stereo mix?

I’m going to say right off the bat my experience with room correction is I always have to fine-tune it because it doesn’t quite understand what’s going on with the room and how it’s influencing how I perceive the sound. I don’t know how Trinnov specifically is in that regard but everything else I’ve tried has been like that. But ultimately, I do get the right sound.

The room, and also know the room upside down, by working and working and working, then the monitors and converters.

I think people just don’t understand how important your room and monitors are to your mixes. As soon I did a major room treatment my mixing translated 75% better. I know for sure the Trinnov system will take me 90% I don’t think I can get anything above that because my room is small. I did a lot of research and I think I did a great job considering its size.

I did a lot of research in room correction and don’t have the money (yet) for a Trinov so I got a MiniDSP with Dirac which works really well for me. I can definitely recommend it if you’re on a budget 👌🏼

The acoustics, monitors and D/A to the speakers has been a massive unspoken asset to a studio that I only saw getting talked about on RUclips commonly in the last 5 years. It's more important than the analogue gear for sure. If you start a mixing studio and do it all from a laptop with a perfect monitoring system (system means every part not the just the speakers as that term goes over peoples head when starting out) you will then start earning enough to then use the over flow of profit for all the extras to make it even better. It is a 80% difference before you begin to add all the things that give you all those extra 1% 2% differences to add up to 99% (we can never claim 100% when there's a lot of subjective opinions to sound) I'd even say controllers is next to speed up your workflow to get more projects before you begin adding these analogue units for those little increases. Not sure if this is the same for recording... maybe a very high end headphone system if you intend to send the martial elsewhere to get mixed and mastered.

it's so interesting... I decided to turn off my studio monitors and listen instead through my creative labs casual listening speakers and I preferred the plugin on the full mix by far - it sounded more HiFi/clear which helped a lot with these speakers. Then I listened to the vocal and it wasn't even close. The hardware absolutely blew it away even on these speakers - it sounds so crisp, clear, and perfectly smoothly compressed. I would've never thought to use this on a vocal anyway. Thanks for shooting these 2 out!

You took the knobs from the legacy knobs on the normal HE2, looks cool

The room is an instrument. Treat it good and it gives you back 100x times what you need I have spent 1 year with acoustic treatment without touching any analog gear. It's worth it.

I did better acoustic treatment and tuned my speaker system and it was an upgrade that I needed to do so much earlier. Absolutely the best investment I’ve done.
